A quality character rig is a must for any successful animation production. The rig must be stable, and have the controls and flexibility needed for an animator to tell their story. In addition the rigger must be able to make changes quickly. In this set of lectures, Axel will effectively demystify the \\\\\\\"art\\\\\\\" of character rigging as well as provide a production-like set of scripted tools to work with. Using the provided scripted tools, Axel demonstrates the benefits of a multi-pose approach to skeleton setup. The separation of deformation and control hierarchies is also used and in conjunction with the pose system, provides the flexibility to easily go back to the bind pose and make changes. Through the process, he details the importance of keeping joint chains planar as well as keeping the joint rotations zeroed out, while showing you how to achieve this through a number of production tricks. Once the joints are all properly mapped, he then moves on to creating the control rig for the character. The next phase involves setting up controls like stretchy IK for the spine, IK and FK with blending for arms and legs, and foot/reverse foot controls. Once the controls are created, Axel wraps things up by generating curve controls for the animators to quickly grab and work with.

We wanted to lay out the game ahead in more detail than we ever have before – since people have asked for a tad more of an idea of the direction and focus of the future Background Fundaments. Based upon feedback from students, this new term and the following term’s Background Fundamentals will concentrate on the visual effects knowledge and tasks that artists run into on a daily basis – focused on method and theory not individual applications.

Over the next two terms we will be covering all the cool and no so cool but important things that come up. From label replacement, matching 3D and live action, keying and lighting, and even some 3D stereoscopic effects. In each case we will try and make the class self contained to that week, while addressing real world shots, with an eye to both budget and timescale. Yes we will even try and budget and cost shots as we go. Plus we get to fly in helicopters and stick needles our (digital eyes). – We hope this will be the most hands on and fun BKD yet.

If you like the challenges in Term 3 – you’ll really enjoy this new term. Classes will either be HOW to approach a shot, or be part of our new one off ON SET specials showing how to work on set and on loaction. We figured we’d pepper the course with these ON SET specials as it they been popular in the past – and it is important to get our of the dark suite and always keep in mind practical options of things you can do on set. You will once again get material to download and work with – and we will have more of our rapid real world challenges. We recommend The Encyclopedia of Visual Effects by Damien Allen as an accompanying textbook for this course, and the next. It is not mandatory, but it will serve as a great reference and provide additional source material to practice with, including material from ILM.

Introduction (01:22) Welcome to an In Depth course on getting up and running with 3D in Photoshop CS6 Extended

Creating a 3D Object (11:42) Here we will learn the numerous ways you can create a 3D object and some things to be aware of to avoid those frustrating "gotcha" moments.

Importing 3D (05:57) In addition to creating numerous types of 3D object, Photoshop can also import 3D objects created in other 3D applications. In this lesson you will learn how to import these objects and use them in your designs.
Understanding the 3D Space (12:11) With 3D being such a new thing in a 2D application you must employ some different thought processes when going into that 3rd dimension. If you are brand new to 3D or even 3D in Photoshop then you will want to watch this lesson.

3D & Properties Panels (09:17) These will be the two most important panels when editing 3D. These are basically the nerve center of 3D in Photoshop. Get to know them well. You will use them a lot!

Extruding & Modifying Custom Shapes (08:11) Extrusion is the default action when you create a 3D object. It extends the converted image into the third dimension but more than just extruding the shape, you can do so much more. Watch and see.

Editbale 3D Text (08:10) Finally designers can rejoice the fact that easily editable 3D text is now a reality in Photoshop. As a designer this feature alone is worth it's weight but once you see what else you can do with it you will wonder how you ever lived without it.

Revolving A 3D Object (07:23) Another technique for creating a 3D shape is called revolving or lathing. This involves bending an object around until it wraps around and closes the shape. In Photoshop this starts with an extrusion. Then there is a little trick to it. Check it out!

Merging 3D Objects (07:14) Now that we have shadows and reflections available on the ground plane there is less reason to merge 3D objects. However if you still want two or more objects to interact with shadows and reflections then you will need to merge them into a single 3d layer.

Texture & Surface Properties 1 (11:13) Now with the shapes created it is time to dress them up with textures. Over the next two lesson we will cover other surface properties like reflections and bump maps and how to tweak them to get the best look.

3D Lighting 1 (11:02) Just like in photography, lighting is very important! It can make or break your 3D art just like it can a photos. Although, the virtual world, you have much more control over the behavior of light and what light properties effect your 3d objects.

3D Lighting 2 (08:42) In addition to the lights we discussed in the last lesson we will also discuss something called an Image Based Light. These are really cool but can be a bit tricky.

Putting it all Together (11:06) Here we will take what we know and put together a quick project. One reason is to basically summarize what we have covered up to this point but also to demonstrate how quickly you can create compelling 3D in a matter of minutes.
